Blackthorn has long been associated with witches and witchcraft in Europe. The thorns are used to both send and reverse curses. Blackthorns protect the innocent when used in sachets, charm bags, or witch bottles buried near one’s house. They can also be used to tip blasting rods or carve words or sigils into candles, wax seals, and copper or lead sheets. In European folk magic, to curse or reverse a curse, blackthorns are stuck into an animal’s heart or a wax, clay, or cloth poppet during a ritual.
